This blog is fucking dog shit! I can't believe I see this race game in my country. I'd expect this in America or Britain but not Canada. I'm proud of how far we've come with our ethnic minorities. I love having different races together, as it enhances our society and has strong unity for all people but you Libtards are really pushing it. Stop blaming white people for the problems of integration. Canada should not bend over anymore for ethnic minorities. They should speak the two national languages, have an understanding of Aboriginal culture and history to be properly assimilated and that's it. No more blaming whitey for racism! Unless you starting talking about reverse racism for a change, then grow up! Its not always white versus Color and playing the race card is a 1980's mentality that should not be used anymore. Whites will eventually push back with all of this race baiting and if you continue to demagogue the issue, expect more racism

Feynman is frequently glorified in physics circles. In fact, he is a hero to some young physics students. Certain types of young men often times are socially awkward, have had bad luck with girls (usually the perfect 10 shallow type drama major types that they think they “deserve” despite being very unattractive themselves), and naïve yet use their higher than average intelligence along with their desire to “be like Feynman” (whether they've properly understood him or not) as a justification or excuse for either treating minority members of the physics community poorly (or inappropriately focusing on them) rather than addressing their psychological inadequacies, analyzing their failures with particular member of the opposite sex, etc. that have manifest as intellectual masochism and even misogyny and contempt at times. Sadly, some of these young men grow up without addressing their emotional inadequacies and become physics professors; the environment for female students is consequently very hostile (hated by the students and professors alike); sexual harassment, inappropriate interest, or at best disregard and arrogance toward female students aree nearly givens… God help you if you don’t want to go out with one of them not because you “think you’re better”, “are a stuck up bitch”, etc., but because you understand full well that it will be talked about in embarrassing detail and/or there’s a huge double standard in play... Being a female physics student wasn’t a fun experience. It completely ruined my self esteem. I realized that I wouldn’t want to work around that for the rest of my life. It’s hard to learn and focus under those types of conditions; I’m so glad I left my school and now am studying physics online as a hobby as it still does interest me although I’d never want to make a career of it as I don’t feel like I deserve to be abused on a daily basis. Furthermore, I observed young men without even so much as an associate’s degree in physics treating our few female PhD professors with disregard and disrespect. This is the reason Feynman’s behavior toward, internal dialog regarding, and treatment of women shouldn’t be glorified. You can’t expect most young female physics students to just “write off the behavior” of the males who harass them in an effort to be an "intellectual rogue/rebel" or “feel sorry for these socially awkward” guys as many of the women are socially awkward not to mention insecure as well; although they aren’t generally quite as bad/auspie as their male counterparts as society hasn’t permitted them to be, they frequently aren’t “typical women” who desire husbands with thick wallets (and perhaps don't want husbands at all!) nor do they understand emotions/male psychology as well as normal women at least when young nor do they care to play "mommy" or be a caretaker, so they’re left very hurt but mainly confused…

i am first nations. i was born & raised in canada and know quite well just how racist canada is. i moved to the us over a decade ago and live there now (i have lived in 8 states and the district of columbia). but am currently studying in canada for my master's degree. all of my post-secondary education and training otherwise has been in the us....the difference between the us and canada in terms of the average capacity of the average person to dialogue in an intelligent, coherent and straightforward manner about issues of race and racism is exponential. the us is, by far, much more socially aware as a nation about race issues (and much more pro-active in legal and social terms in addressing it). canada is in the dark ages compared to the us; this is saying a lot considering that the majority of the us is still very much in the nascent stages of realizing a truly just, equitable, respectful society and in dealing with its horrific past of extreme racist norms. three days after i moved back to canada i was walking down the street in a majority white neighborhood when i heard loud insistent honking. as soon as i turned to look a middle-aged white man flipped me the bird. while at work one day, three white men began bashing natives, feeding off of each other's hatred and ignorance, one of them looked at me and said: we should have killed you all when we had the chance. once i am done my thesis i am moving back home (the us). i consider the us my home now for a number of reasons among them the feeling of belonging and of having relevance there as a legitimate member of american society; i have never gotten this feeling in canada. of course my tribal homelands will always be my first home, but i consider the us my country far more so than canada. by the way? indigenous people are not and never were "real canadians" as you seem to be implying. we are discrete nations in and of ourselves and to call us "canadians" is far more of an insult and product of woeful ignorance than anything else, including the use of the misnomer "indian". while some indigenous people may have lost touch with their own history enough to be complicit in their own colonization by adopting a "canadian" political and cultural identity, there are many of us who have never lost the faith and continue to be deeply loyal to our own cultural and political identities.

Wow there are a lot of interesting views here... Obviously the extreme racial comments that Fred is posting doesn't really count. for me..I've been in Toronto for 25 years and seen the lows and high the ebb and flow .. but racism in Toronto is a bit more complex when it comes to the black people living here.. I'm from Guyanese decent father black and mother Indian with a dark brown complexion so most of the time I was considered one thing only by society .. BLACK.....The first thing I need to point out that Toronto is based on British class system.. where money education living condition living area, profession all come into play of social classification. The British settlers have been here for 200 odd years.. The queen of England is on the 20 dollar bill that alone should say a lot. British people are by nature or reputation are thought of being arrogant snobby and upper class because of their direct correlation to the Monarchy in England..Now guys and gals all this comes into play on the topic of black racism in Canada/Toronto..Black folks need to realize something all of whats going on here in the city makes a lot of sense. The majority of blacks moved here from the Island or Africa for a better life.
But what happened...??... Shootings ..killings drugs..banks scams..Boxing day shooting and killing of an innocent blond white girl which if you'd ask me is THE STRAW THAT BROKE THE CAMELS BACK for sure. Are All black people bad NO!!! However the few were enough to dent and shatter the black social reputation...Remember THE YEAR OF THE GUN?...wow.
The black people now have a negative reputation attached to their name the only way to fix that is to avoid the above mentioned points and rectify the situation..Also Toronto does not have a planned black community like mostly f the other cultured have.. Wood bridge is Italian.. Brampton is East Indian ..Markham is Chinese. York region Persian/Korean/Chinese... Where are the blacks?Jane and Finch ... Eglinton West???... Housing projects.. Low income housing...???...
Now.. Does that deserve really social and ethnic respect?Or is this now racism towards blacks??...
There will be much more that I'll post but for no this is good enough o,k..
Just to comments on one more thing..
Are all white women attractive?? HELL NO!!!!!! mathematically if you are majority in a country of course there will be more attractive whites then blacks..70 percent white to 8 percent blacks
I find Beyonce Kelly Rowland Karren Alexander very easy to look at..
So if anybody in here thinks that white people are the only attractive people in the city that's is complete none sense..

Any body who has a constructive reply please feel to respond..
I'm not a racist and do not discriminate.. and guess what life is so much better with love and peace..
I have friends of every race and ethnic background and I will bet that the number of non racial people in Toronto with outnumber the racial people in Toronto by 10 times..
Lets do this.. all of us work at it ... will it ever be perfect ??.. No... but we can get close..

I found out today where East Asians read emotion. Now I KNOW WHERE TO LOOK!

I just tried this. I watched 2 You Tube videos, one of a white violinist and one of an Asian violinist. 1st time round, I just watch their *mouth*. Nothing else. Yup. the white people all seemed to be into it, and the Asian was completely dead.

2nd time around, I watched everything but their mouths. The Asian violinist really really really really really came to life all of the sudden. It was breathtaking. She moves the most, she flows the most, she has it all in the crinkle on the corner of her eye. All the white people playing looked positively bored compared to her. SHE was the most emotional person playing--ALL EXCEPT HER MOUTH!

THAT'S why you look 'emotionless'. Not because we're 'cruel' or 'insensitive' or 'mean' or 'hate other people' but because WE'RE LOOKING AT YOUR MOUTH!

Now, instead of dissing us, TELL US WHERE TO LOOK!

I could really use where to look on Black people too. From this perspective, I'm not uncomfortable around black people because I'm an insensitive jerk or a racist piece of scum. I'm uncomfortable because THEIR NEUTRAL MOUTHS LOOK CRANKY TO ME! They bend down. On a white person, a bent down mouth equals a frown, which means the person wearing it hates you. Where do black people look when reading expressions?

To see where I'm coming from, imagine trying to read people's facial expressions your whole life by looking only at their ears and forehead. That's it. People who can wiggle their ears all seem to be full of life, emotional, human people. People who don't (or can't) wiggle their ears seem like insensitive zombies. Then someone tells you to make eye contact. WHAM! Suddenly most of the world is people.

Unfortunately, it's 'racist' to talk about race, so of course we get left out in the cold when it comes to going 'yes, I look different than you. That does have meaning. It means that because I look different than you, I read faces differently than you, and because of that, when you sit across the room and we make eye contact, you look happy/sad/cranky/grumpy'. Then the other person says "What?! I wasn't feeling that at all. I was feeling uncomfortable/bored/nothing/tired', didn't you see my eyes? "Uh, no, I was looking at your mouth". "What the hell were you looking there for?" "When I was a baby, my mom smiled at me and pointed to it?" "Uh. Next time, look at my eyes.' 'THANK YOU!"

@Fabio Cunctator: Heidigger was not merely a Nazi sympathizer, but an actual Nazi, albeit on the civilian/political side rather than on the military/police/bureacracy side. Thus, being a Nazi-"sympathizer" is irrelevant. You are effectively claiming that being a flaming sexist is as bad as being a Nazi. And that may well be true (patriarchy in general is responsible for a Shoah with millions of victims)---yet let's be clear that you are going Full Godwin here.
***

When I first read SYJMF as a mid-teenager, I took Feynman's approach very literally. I didn't and still don't think he was being subtle and I don't think he was positing other than that he was owed some amount of sex from some of the women for whom he bought so many drinks an other things.

As a geeky, uber-shy, and social awkward kid who was an utter clod and sexytime-procuring-failure with the women I was attracted to, I also took Feynman's approach to heart, while I read it and from time to time afterward. Without thought of excuse, only explanation, it would have been tough at the time to ladle on even more self-loathing; far less painful to spend at least some of the frustration on internal recitation of Feynman's "bitches ain't shit" routine.

That approach and attitude really wasn't me, however---neither how I was "by nature" nor how I was raised. As a result, I never experimented with it outside of my own head. I was gratified that Feynman was not comfortable with it either and eventually dropped it. Nevertheless, I admired his ability to play with the role, and admiration came easily because the women in his story did not really seem to mind the treatment. (Yes, at the time, concepts of structural patriarchy and mind-colonization were unknown to me, despite my mom's feminist books and subscription to Ms. magazine.)

Moreover, I'll admit that I was more interested in What It All Meant About Women than in what it meant about Feynman or patriarchy. Ultimately, though, what I learned most from Feynman's story was about myself, through my complete inability to be That Guy. At the time, I thought that made me a pathetic loser. Later in life, I realized that even if some women were as-described, I just didn't *want* to be That Guy. And I met and dated and had sex and relationships with awesome women who showed me Feynman's experiment and insights were irrelevant to my life.

Feynman was still a problematic 50s man, though. I believe another of his stories may illustrate this. He writes (I think in SYJMF) about how, after the war but still very boyish-looking, he couldn't get anywhere with women grad students if he truthfully told them he was a professor of physics. (One woman reportedly mocked by saying "I'll bet you were on the Manhattan Project, too;" IIRC, she walked off on him after he truthfully responded Yes.)

Even in my mid-teen hormonal tumult and ambivalence, I was at least partly troubled by the notion he'd be trying to fuck students. Yes, they were grad students; yes, they were his age; yes, they were the women around him; and yes, most of them were probably not physics students. Still, he was in a position of power, and his pursuits didn't seem right. Still less right seemed his solution to the student's disbelief that he was a professor and Manhattan Project alumnus, *lying to them* by claiming to be just another physics grad student.

I think the OPs analysis is not wrong (although perhaps not the only right reading). I don't think it defames Feynman or "soils" his legacy/memory. Feynman was no dummy, and I'm confident he knew precisely the many ways in which his "bitches!" chapter would be read. To the extent people think ill of him based on this chapter, I think he knew they/we would do so, and he put it out there anyway. That could be a poke in the eye or it could be admirable candor. This was, after all, a man who famously liked to ask (as did his first wife, Arline) "what do you care what other people think?"

I still like Feynman a great deal, but I have the luxury---the *privilege*---of being a man whose worst-case, like that often of Feynman, was no more than not getting laid. I think from the perspective of a woman, who might be a target, such predatory tendencies as Feynman discloses are much more disturbing, and might outweigh his positive contributions (as in, does anyone even give a damn anymore that Roman Polanski makes movies).

Feynman was no dummy, and I’m confident he knew precisely the many ways in which his “bitches!” chapter would be read. To the extent people think ill of him based on this chapter, I think he knew they/we would do so, and he put it out there anyway. That could be a poke in the eye or it could be admirable candor. This was, after all, a man who famously liked to ask (as did his first wife, Arline) “what do you care what other people think?”

I still like Feynman a great deal, but I have the luxury—the *privilege*—of being a man whose worst-case, like that often of Feynman, was no more than not getting laid. I think from the perspective of a woman, who might be a target, such predatory tendencies as Feynman discloses are much more disturbing, and might outweigh his positive contributions (as in, does anyone even give a damn anymore that Roman Polanski makes movies).
