Asians are not all rich.

There is a ridiculous post at 8asians titled Asian Men Have The Highest Salary that was linked from Racialicious for some reason. The author, Tim, writes:

If you were looking for another reason to date an Asian male, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics just came up with one. In their latest report on earnings in the 2nd quarter of 2010, Asian men topped the charts again, making $901 in median weekly earnings. Asian women were second at $854, followed by white men at $838.

Let us ignore the often sexist stereotype that women are attracted to rich men for now and look at the issue of race and income. The data I have comes from Ontario, Canada, and the great thing about Canadian race statistics is that Asians are not all lumped together.

Average Employment Income By Racialized Group, Ontario, 2005

Only Japanese Canadian men earn more on average than White (non-racialized) Canadian men. Asian Canadian men of all other ethnicities (seven others listed here) earn less on average than White Canadian men. Japanese Canadian women earn more that White Canadian women on average, but less than White Canadian men. Asian Canadian women of all other ethnicities earn less than White Canadian women, on average.

While Ontario, Canada is not the same as the United States, we can assume that the two areas are comparable until the U.S. begins collecting more detailed Asian statistics, or unless there are theoretical reasons why the cultural differences may change the result. Another difference is that U.S. statistic uses the median, while the Ontario statistic uses the mean. However, the Ontario data is still useful in showing that there is great variability when it comes to Asian earnings.

Let us move on to more nonsense from Tim:

These latest statistics just prove that those who studied and did well in school got to have the last laugh, by making the most money.

First of all, Tim assumes that non-Asian people must not have studied hard, and that’s why they earn less, which is a standard conservative fallacy. Secondly, Asian Canadians other than Japanese Canadians earn less than White Canadians, on average. Does that mean that Korean Canadians, for example, must be “lazy” and non-studious relative to White Canadians? It’s sad that some Asian Americans believe in the Asian stereotype constructed by white conservatives.

Tim continues:

In the end, I hope being successful, makes up for all the teasing, taunting and bullying the educated Asian male had to put up with during the childhood and teen years.

Sorry, suffering as a geek/nerd during childhood and teenagehood is not an experience exclusive to Asian males, males, or Asians.

And maybe this will help put a little more desirability for Asian males in the dating pool. (Back when I was in the dating pool every little bit would have helped!)

Eww. Creepy. Having sexist evolutionary psychology/sociobiological assumptions does not make you attractive to heterosexual women. Reducing the complex issue of race and income into what benefits heterosexual men sexually does not help, either.

Isn’t it going to be just awesome when we switch to the voluntary short-form Census and we don’t have information like this anymore?

Seriously, I’m convinced the short-form Census is a way for white men in government to save money at the expense of everyone else.

i work in the trucking industry, all minority drivers would much work for a white owned or managed company, they now that if they work for their own they will be ripped off.
case in point , the headlines in the toronto paper about the chinese workers being paid less than minimun wages by their chinese employers.
the survey should list the culture of the emplorers this employees work for also, dont blame the lower wages on white owned companies!
Chinks and packies will rip off their own because they know their workers dont have a clue about their rights!

*CURSES* And I was hoping it wasn’t going to end up coming to that. I am sick of the assumption that Asian males are not attractive, and that Asian women only want white man. That ALL women only want white man, because the white man is the ultimate desirable object. That’s bullshit. I know lots of great Asian man who are attractive and get girlfriends easily and it has little or nothing to do with how much they make.

Anyways, I know that wasn’t the point of your post. I agree, lumping all Asians together is inaccurate and skewing data. No, I’m not making that much as a Chinese female even with my Master degree. My family isn’t, and I see it in families in Chinatown who worked hard hours at a hard job who definitely aren’t making more than white people. When I think of at least the Chinese community, I think of those people, and feel hugely out of place with at my workplace with the non-Chinese who talk about new cars and trips to the cottage and how much their house cost.

So much about that post annoys me.

This is unlikely. If Asian-Am men earn the most in the USA, in order for Jp-Am men to be the only ones making more than white males, they would have to consitute a huge majority among As-Am males, or would have to make so much that they completely offset the others.

Asian-Amaericans in general have long made more than whites in the USA (58K vs 47K according to last census) and given the huge population of non-japanese, its doubtful the ontario stats translate.

Just of the top of my head, I recall reading various “woo hoo hoo!” articles in the american ethnic papers (of the old-fashoined type that our parents would read, not like racialicious) demonstrating Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, Indian, and fillipino Americns out-earning whites. Cambodians, Laotian, Vietnamese earn generally less, if I recall.

In other words, restructure won’t be happy until women earn more than men and whites earn less than everyone else. Who am I kidding? That won’t make her happey, either. She’ll just find something else to whinge about.

His post perpetuates several Asian American stereotypes:
    - Asian Americans are rich
    - Asian Americans are the “model minority” and studious
    - Asian American men are sexist
    - (Heterosexual) Asian American men are sex-deprived pervs like Long Duk Dong

    On the other hand:
    - Tim and insiders get a chuckle out of the joke

    Is it really worth it?

Most non-Asians who read the post at New America Media are not going to click through to the 8asians article and then click through to Tim’s profile to find out that he’s gay.

  12. Anonymous Says:

I’m not quite sure how it perpetuates a “stereotype” that Asian Americans are rich, when in fact the numbers bear out on average they do make more. I’m sure that’s based on Asian Americans being more educated. Average numbers are just that, averages. Asian American averages are higher than other groups. That means most make more than others, but some do make less.

I also didn’t see anywhere, where there was a perpetuation of the “model minority” stereotype. He specifically said for those that worked hard in school they made more (that was also from the US Bureau of Labor Stats – people with degrees made more than people without). Same thing with “sex-deprived pervs”, all he said was it was difficult enough to be in the dating pool as an Asian male.

You made quite a few conclusions based on your view, and not what was written in the article.

In looking over some of the blogger responses, I am begin to despair that of them are getting hostile.

On of the underlying and vexing issues that White respondents don’t realize is that one of the major concepts and trajectories of “racism” is the rhetorical / discursive nature of it all—with its hidden assumptions, values, and the failure in recognizing that the rhetoric/language soon becomes “common sense” ideology, public policy and finally LEGISLATION, transforming ideology – attitudes into LAW.

Think of the many anti-immigration / citizenship laws created in North American that emerged out of these kind of paranoiac fears, designed to EXCLUDE East and West Asians from participation and therefore out of competition with White males in access to resources, employment, and now ridiculous claims of “access” to the bodies of their racial group’s women…!

Is this really the crux of this discussion and fear is about…? That wealthy Asian males will some how take over, screw / marry “luscious” lily White women because they find Asian males desirable providers….? It is appearing that way! Like Asian men are even interested in pursuing White women!!! I seriously doubt that’s their fxxxking goal in life….!

In the debates about the so called greater “economic wealth” of Asians, it appears to play perfectly in re-enforcing the myth of “Asian model minority”. Model Minority rhetoric is an ideology that strategically works in pitting Asians against other racial groups such as Blacks and Latins, constructed in the mainstream as “lazy” and “welfare dependents”; it creates the absurd “Yellow Peril” fears of Asians “invading” and “taking over” the privileges and entitlements of Whites. Like Colourblind rhetoric, Asian Model Minority discourse similarly works to DEFLECT AND SILENCE the specific concerns and challenges in that community…So now any Asian community rebuttal/dissent/complaints of poverty – social struggle, or contrary evidence can be DISMISSED and DISCOUNTED with the pseudo-sociological arguments of uncritical articles like Asian Men Have Higher Salaries….

But what disturbs me most in reading the responses of certain bloggers, is the ways in which once intelligent debates are becoming increasingly undemocratic, hostile, getting down right nasty with name calling/personal attacks…further exposing the racism and contempt of the White bloggers who somehow feel threatened that they are “loosing ground’. Soon White Euro-North Americans will feel the need for open calls of solidarity in closing ranks against the Other. It reads like an open call to start “retrenching” and preparing for “battle” against the “Yellow menace”.

This is the big irrational bi-product racialized Others call racism – White privilege/supremacy!

We are sinking to another low…Feeling alienated…
