That was…wow. You have to laugh to keep from crying at the truth of this.

    AWESOME!

You have succinctly listed just about all the reasons why I absolutely, positively loathe pseudo science bunk that passes as Evolutionary Psychology. I honestly think it was created by marketing firms to insidiously control American tastes while building an ever wider dissatisfied consumer base—with Helen Fisher and Richard Buss at the helm. How can statistical analysis of a few hundred people in modern times, be used to supposedly extrapolate human behavior from thousands of years ago and that evidence justifies pre-determinism, clearly delineated gender differences, and hard wired genetic supremacy. It is most irritating that statistical forecasting is accepted by the science community as a valid tool in predicting human behavior and that Evolutionary Psychology has so much social and scientific currency. I mean I never hear scientists actively call out some of their more ludicrous claims especially by borderline hucksters like Alan S. Miller, Satoshi Kanazawa.

We might as well bring back phrenology.

LOL! I just saw the related posts and you already discussed Alan S. Miller, Satoshi Kanazawa! I loathe the both of those intellectual burnouts.

Stephen Jay Gould criticized evolutionary psychology, but evolutionary psychologists may not take his criticisms as seriously, because he was not trained in evolutionary psychology. However, rejecting criticisms outside your specialized discipline is like alchemists rejecting the criticisms of chemists because they are not alchemists. Sometimes, your research program is fundamentally wrong.

However, I don’t think there is something fundamentally wrong with assuming that evolution influences psychology. It’s just that not all psychological behaviour must be explained by evolution, when there is a better environmental explanation. Also, many of the assumptions behind these theories are wrong, such as that the association of women with pink was consistent throughout history, Kanazawa’s assumption that most suicide bombers are Muslim, etc. It’s like they are shockingly ignorant of history and don’t bother to do a bit of basic research, taking media stereotypes at face value as if they cannot apply critical thinking to the media messages they receive in their daily life.
